John Chapter 1

Out of all of the Gospels in the Bible, I have always found the Gospel of John to be the most interesting. I don't really know why that is, and I freely admit that the other three Gospels are very good, but there has always been something about the Gospel of John that is interesting. I'll start this with chapter one. This chapter is quite the overview of Jesus and the beginning of His ministry.

John starts out by introducing Jesus to his readers as not just a man or a prophet like many choose to believe, but he introduces Jesus as "the Word" (John 1:1) and that He was with God in the beginning (John 1:2). There is so much theology in these first two verses alone, that one could spend quite awhile on. not only do we have an introduction of "the Word" but we also see that in verse one that "the Word was with God, and the Word was God". This is an excellent source for people who believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ, and also for people who believe in the Holy Trinity because there is a description of the Word as being God and also being with God. In verse 2 we read that "the Word" was with God in the beginning.

Then later on we read that "the Word" is the source of everything made and also that He is the light of the world (verse 3). Even though "the Word" was in the world and that the world finds it's source in Him, the world does not accept Him as it's founder, it's creator (verse 10). How many people have you seen that are pure atheists? There are a number of those out there that claim that everything happened by chance and that there is no creator. Also, how many people have you heard say that they believe that there COULD be a God, but they don't know for sure so they are not going to believe in any particular creed or religion. And how many people do you know that subscribe to faiths that claim that there is only one non-Trinitarian God, or that there are many gods or that they themselves will one day become gods? All of these people do not accept the "light".

Yet there are those who He has chosen as His children, and this is by nothing natural. We are called to be born of God (verse 13).

Then we find that "the Word" indeed became flesh and that he dwelled among us (verse 14). This man is full of grace and truth (verse 15). Grace is the free gift, and that free gift came through Jesus Christ (verse 17). We cannot see God, but God has been made Himself known to the world (verse 18).

Then John the Baptist introduces the world after explaining that he himself is not the Christ (verse 20), when Jesus arrives (verse 29). However, before Jesus arrives John is questioned about why he baptizes people, and John explains that he is only baptizing with water (verse 26). Later on John gives his testimony on how he knew that Jesus is the Christ becomes he saw the Holy Spirit descend on Him like a dove and that this man will not baptize with water, but with the Holy Spirit (verses 32-34). The chapter ends with Jesus calling the first four disciples (or apostles) to follow Him. The first two were Andrew and Peter, then Philip, and lastly Nathanael.

I could go more in depth about this chapter and in fact, I'm sure that there could be many books written about the content of this chapter alone, but I believe that this is a good start to understanding the Gospel of John. Like I mentioned before, there is so much theology in this chapter alone and yet the Gospel of John goes even more in depth theologically speaking. What is the most important thing to note about the Gospels is that they were written about Jesus Christ and what He did for the world. They are a witness of the Messiah, and are a revelation of the "One and Only" (verse 18), who came here to save the whole world.
